Moremi Game Reserve

Designated in 1963 by the local Batawana people to safeguard their ancestral hunting grounds, Moremi Game Reserve was the first wildlife sanctuary in Africa established by an indigenous community on their own land. Encompassing nearly 5,000 square kilometers in the central and eastern sectors of the Okavango Delta, Moremi is frequently described as the most beautiful wildlife reserve in Africa.

Chief’s Island: The Predator Capital

The centerpiece of Moremi is Chief's Island, a vast sand ridge rising above the surrounding floodwaters. Because it remains dry year-round even during peak floods, it concentrates extraordinary numbers of grazing antelopes, which in turn sustain phenomenal densities of apex predators. Moremi is especially celebrated as one of the best locations in Africa to observe endangered African wild dogs (painted wolves) actively hunting in coordinated packs.

Morning open 4x4 game drives through mopane woodlands and acacia savannas reveal leopards, cheetahs, and lions, while afternoon motorboat safaris explore the deep, papyrus-fringed channels of the Xakanaxa Lagoon, teeming with waterbirds, hippos, and crocodiles.

Dead Tree Island & Spectacular Birding

Moremi’s striking visual landscapes include Dead Tree Island, where skeletal leadwood trees stand submerged in tranquil waters against brilliant blue skies. With over 500 recorded bird species, it is an avian wonderland offering sightings of Pel’s fishing owl, slaty egrets, and wattled cranes.
