Sossusvlei & Namib Desert

Located in the heart of the ancient Namib Desert—believed to be the oldest desert on Earth at over 55 million years—Sossusvlei is a breathtaking clay pan surrounded by colossal, star-shaped sand dunes in Namib-Naukluft National Park. The towering dunes, blown in from the Kalahari and enriched with iron oxide, shift in color from pale apricot at sunrise to deep burnt-orange and vivid crimson under the blazing midday sun.

The Ethereal Wonder of Deadvlei

Adjacent to Sossusvlei lies Deadvlei ('Dead Marsh'), one of the most photographed and surreal landscapes in the world. Once fed by the ephemeral Tsauchab River, ancient climate shifts starved the clay pan of water over 900 years ago. Today, the desiccated, pitch-black skeletons of dead camel thorn trees (Vachellia erioloba) stand frozen in time against a blindingly white clay floor, framed by the towering orange walls of Big Daddy dune and deep cobalt-blue desert skies.

Climbing Iconic Dunes

Rise before dawn to enter the park gates at sunrise to climb some of the tallest sand dunes in existence:

• Dune 45: The most accessible and climbed dune in the park, standing 85 meters high and offering sweeping sunrise views across the dune sea.
• Big Daddy: Soaring to 325 meters, challenging adventurous hikers before allowing an exhilarating slide down its steep sand face directly into Deadvlei.
• Big Mama: The massive dune sentinel guarding the northern end of Sossusvlei pan.

Sesriem Canyon & Stargazing

Near the park entrance, the Tsauchab River has carved Sesriem Canyon, a narrow 30-meter-deep limestone gorge that offers cool shaded walks between sheer rock walls. At night, the Namib Desert’s certified Dark Sky Reserve status provides some of the most extraordinary stargazing on the planet.
