Tsingy de Bemaraha

Located in the remote Melaky region of western Madagascar, Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is a geological and evolutionary wonder unlike anything else on Earth. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1990, the park covers 1,575 square kilometers dominated by a vast, impenetrable forest of razor-sharp limestone karst needles known in the Malagasy language as Tsingy—aptly translating to 'the place where one cannot walk barefoot.'

Formed over 200 million years as ocean deposits were uplifted by tectonic forces and then chiseled by tropical monsoon rain erosion, the limestone pinnacles soar up to 100 meters high in vertical spires resembling gothic cathedrals. Between these razor-sharp stone blades lie deep, subterranean box canyons, humid microclimate fissures, and hidden caves that preserve completely isolated mini-ecosystems.

Exploring the Grand Tsingy is an exhilarating, world-class trekking adventure. Outfitted with safety climbing harnesses and carabiners, hikers navigate a challenging via ferrata system—scrambling through tight cave chambers, scaling vertical rock faces on iron rungs, and crossing swaying 70-meter-high wire suspension bridges strung across dizzying chasms between needle spires.

Endemic Wildlife of the Stone Forest

Despite the harsh, sun-baked stone environment, Tsingy de Bemaraha supports remarkable biodiversity adapted to vertical living. Agile white Decken’s sifakas leap effortlessly across razor-sharp limestone points, while the dark canyon floors shelter ring-tailed vontsira (mongooses), Madagascan fish eagles, and unique miniature broad-leafed chameleons.

Pirogue Journeys on the Manambolo River

Access to the park typically includes an enchanting traditional wooden pirogue canoe voyage along the scenic Manambolo River Gorge, gliding past towering vertical red-and-orange canyon cliffs, ancient burial caves of the mysterious ancestral Vazimba people, and bat-filled stalactite caverns.
