Fish River Canyon

Located in the arid, windswept south of Namibia, the Fish River Canyon is the second-largest canyon on Earth and the largest in Africa. Carving a dramatic, serpentine trench 160 kilometers long, up to 27 kilometers wide, and plunging down to 550 meters deep, this colossal geological rift began forming over 500 million years ago through subterranean tectonic fracture and the persistent erosion of the ancient Fish River.

Breathtaking Rim Viewpoints

The most accessible vantage points are centered around Hobas on the eastern canyon rim. Standing at the main viewpoint or Hell's Bend at sunrise or sunset, visitors watch the deep shadows and golden light reveal millions of years of exposed geological strata, volcanic dolerite dykes, and the meandering riverbed glistening hundreds of meters below.

World-Famous Wilderness Backpacking

During the cooler winter months (May to September), the canyon floor is the site of the legendary Fish River Canyon Hike. This demanding 85-kilometer, multi-day self-supported wilderness trek follows the riverbed from Hobas down to the natural thermal hot springs at Ai-Ais, testing stamina while offering complete solitude beneath towering canyon cliffs.

Ai-Ais Hot Springs & Desert Flora

At the southern conclusion of the canyon lies Ai-Ais ('Burning Water' in the local Nama language), an oasis surrounding natural geothermal springs rich in minerals, providing thermal pools and therapeutic baths. Along the canyon rim, keep watch for the iconic quiver tree (Aloidendron dichotomum), a prehistoric succulent used by San hunters to make arrow quivers.
