Kaokoveld & Epupa Falls

Situated in the far northwestern corner of Namibia along the border with Angola, the Kaokoveld (Kunene Region) is one of Africa’s last truly untamed, roadless wilderness frontiers. The Spectacle of Epupa Falls

At Epupa Falls (meaning 'falling water' in the Herero language), the Kunene River plunges 37 meters across a half-kilometer series of parallel cascades, rocky ravines, and natural pools. What makes Epupa globally unique is the scenery framing the waterfalls: ancient, twisting baobab trees cling precariously to vertical rock ledges above the roaring spray, creating one of the most picturesque natural vistas in Southern Africa.

Living Himba Cultural Traditions

The Kaokoveld is the ancestral homeland of the semi-nomadic Himba people, who have fiercely guarded their traditional pastoralist way of life against modern encroachment. Himba women are renowned worldwide for their intricate cornrow braided hairstyles and the application of otjize—a fragrant cosmetic paste of red ochre, butterfat, and wild resin that protects their skin from the harsh desert climate and symbolizes the sacred connection between blood, earth, and beauty.

Remote Wilderness Expeditions

Reaching Epupa Falls requires an adventurous 4x4 overland journey through the dusty trading settlement of Opuwo. Along the river, travelers enjoy scenic sunset ridge walks, guided cultural visits, and crocodile spotting along the riverbanks.
